Prepare to be Amazed...

Plainly stupid and definitely evil.

My name is Amazing Kris, and I bid you welcome.
I don't bite anymore, but please don't take me to the vet's. I am prone to lycanthropy and savage misunderstandings. I am an asshole with obsessive tendencies.
I converted my unread humour vanity page into an unread movie review page. My first exhibits are of Winnipeg lunatics "Astron 6 Video International" and "Greypoint films". Make yourselves comfortable, feel free to comment on and rate the work I review.
Remember, kids, everything in Green Lazer text is a clickable link, so be sure to explore the broad wake of my destructive internet path. If you would like anything of me, be sure to contact me.
I love you, and you make me sick.

Kill Kostanski Studios: "Fantasy Beyond" (animated short)

Do you love the idea of being whisked away into another world? Can you spend all day immersed in a book, or a movie, and just find yourself lost in your own little room?
Allow Steven Kostanski to pull away the curtain and bring you into a gallery of his own devising. We begin this tour with glowing pastels, gentle music and the opening titles.
Follow him into Fantasy Beyond...

The welcoming marble halls of an art museum present to a little girl a world of wonder and beauty. But is this place heaven, or an inter-dimensional deathtrap?
Giant grabbing claws pass freely in and out of the paintings at will, and a horrific monster's face appears on the back wall. Eerie happenings unfold, and it seems as though the little girl has no escape-- until a crash from above.
Two leather-clad futuristic guitar heroes leap down to the rescue, blasting away with all the rock-and-roll might as they can muster! A battle to the death ensues.

Hyper-capable film genius Steve Kostanski delic...

Greypoint: "Cool Dan"

Cool Dan is easily my favourite of the fine Greypoint library.
Dedicated to Metis leader Louis Riel, it shows how other Manitoban heroes rise above adversity. It shows that growing up in this day and age can't be easy. That sometimes, being a man means you have to watch the coolest movies.

Set in present day Winnipeg, we join melancholic Conor seeking his raison-d'etre. His roommate Matthew makes it his mission to pull Conor out of his funk, and a day out with the girls is just the cure. They did not expect a tragic encounter with local hardnosed fascists to rip them from their true loves. Unable to thwart their oppressors, Matt and Conor find themselves crushed underheel and desperately lost.
But then they meet Cool Dan, and everything changes... forever.

Cool Dan (Dan Hussey) is the coolest kid in all of Winnipeg, and definitely off-limits for two innocents like Conor and Matt. He is an R-rated guru who wears his hat on backwards and sees that it's time for the boys t...

The Happening

I have a theory about the effects money has on Hollywood genius directors. They cease to be human, and therefore can't relate to what paying audience members seek in an evening of entertainment. They nonchalantly finger through parlour tricks and stumbled treasures that worked in the past. Maybe just throw in a megacelebrity, and we're there.

One-trick pony M. Night Shyamalan really impressed me this time. He is not the next Rod Serling, to put it nicely. I was convinced that his dialogue and character development couldn't be any more stilted, unfunny and pointless than that of a fourth-grade puppet show. Oopsie.
He made a fool out of me, let me tell you people. The most amazing thing is this: I can't be sure Shyamalan is aware that he sucks as a writer.

Worsening from his sleeper hit debut The Sixth Sense, The Happening plummets you into a new kind of boredom. You see, when you find yourself wanting to shout at the screen, it's usually because you're involved with wha...

It’s not a profession of any sort; for one, it’s a passion and for the other, it's a pastime.
Gub is a fleet-footed loner with nothing to prove and no particular ambition, but likes to run his legs off all day and night. It’s a passive interest, but his speed attracts the attention of His love interest Mandy might have been the only thing he ever had going for him, but she just wants to have fun.
Brent, a thuggish head case, shares an interest in two things with Gub: Gub's ex-girlfriend Mandy and running. Brent loves running more than he loves Mandy, and Gub is the reverse. Gub just happens to be better at handling both. When his sidekick Rex loses to Gub in a sprint, Brent becomes threatened and risks losing sight of the girl.

Greypoint: "The Dragon Hunter"

The Dragon Hunter is a must-see for any man who cherishes his glory days and knows the value of true friendship. It is a masculine story about a journey to hell, and all the joy and adversity that strengthens one’s bearing.
A coming-of-age saga and an emotional rollercoaster ride to be had for all. Somewhere in it, there is homage paid to a five-time Academy Award® winning film, but the lines are effectively blurred to keep the integrity of the current piece. Act one has a lively eclectic soundtrack featuring Cyndi Lauper and Herman’s Hermits, even borrowing from old favourite film classics like Labyrinth and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

It is stuffed with feel-good moments that remind any fellow of how great it is to have a special pal in life. As two leisurely lads make a day of it, it looks as though happy times are eternal. Nothing is forever, sadly. With the pressures of work p...

Astron 6: "Insanophenia"

Intense fervour and zeal is felt in this pseudo J-horror film, as director Steven Kostanski carefully bricks together the most peculiar screenplay.

In the lower levels of a non-descript complex, an unwelcome guest lurks in the shadows and around corners. Two morons are dispatched to the basement as exterminators to vanquish this nasty life form and its vermin offspring. Their supervisor is a lascivious maniac who unapologetically promises inappropriate touching at shift’s end. Not sure what exactly they’re up against, they begin a descent with caustic spray canisters on their backs to earn their wages.

There was an immense spirit present for the creation of Insanophenia that cannot be denied. The production value is outstanding for a shoestring budget, and as always in Astron 6, the actors did a fine job playing their roles. It is what I could call a p...

Astron 6: "H.I.Z. (Erection Der Zombie)"

*Disclaimer – The short film being reviewed here contains themes that are strong in nature. If excess gore, rubber penises and foul language are offensive to you, please pay no mind.

H.I.Z. (Erection Der Zombie) is here!
A scientist makes away with a top secret military-grade STD. He is brought down by soldiers, but not before a sample virus is released into the soil of Ena Lake.
Flash forward twenty years, and meet a gang of rock-static oversexed youth ready to have one hell of a summer as counsellors at Camp Ena. Once one of them becomes infected with HIZ, it’s only a matter of time before the entire campgrounds are overrun by vicious horny ghouls!

HIZ is a fun romp through the carnal imaginations of Astron 6. Writing duo Matthew Kennedy and Conor Sweeney fly like arrows once again, but might perhaps not hit the mark. The jokes are (deliberately) utterly mindless, and the violence is over the top. It’s still entertaining, even if just for being hideous, sexually caval...

Greypoint: "Punch Out"

It reads like a sitcom pilot with teeth. Square Pegs meets Trainspotting, let’s say. It is set in the time and place that I forgivingly refer to as “Eighties World”, since the observation of eighties era pop culture is scattered from ’83 to ‘87.

For a half-hour story, there is enough who’s-who to make a primetime series. The smarmy main character Matt is an audacious malcontent who needs to have his head rocked by a solid punch to the face to straighten him out. He develops a habit of upsetting people because he likes it so much. Dylan Gyles aptly carries out this role with casual mayhem. His pissed-off father (Hooper) even gets into the act, trying to thump sense into his obnoxious son.
Adam Brooks steps out of his typecast to play a baby-faced neurotic Jesse, taking heat from all sides and trying to overcome his gynophobia. Meredith Sweeney and Amy Groening ...

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Indiana Jones and the WTF?!?

Right off the bat, I will tell you that if you intend on watching "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull", you ought to be prepared for a bit of a departure from earlier Indy movies.
A departure, meaning that the earlier chapters made sense.
And were watchable.

I tried to keep an open mind about it. Initially, I thought it was written badly because all of Hollywood had run out of ideas. I have been led to believe this before. Then I threw my head back and laughed to myself, remembering:
"Lucassssss! My old nemesisssss!"
It's about high time I learned never to trust anything that man's name is on.

I swear, George Lucas should be locked away. Since it's his mission to completely undo all the good he has ever done in his career, at this crescendo I can now finally say "mission accomplished". The damage he does is irreparable in this (hopefully) final installment to the Indiana Jones saga.
I took this one very personally....

Astron 6: "Lazer Ghosts 2: Return to Laser Cove"

I can't rave enough about “Lazer Ghosts 2: Return to Laser Cove”, available through Astron 6 Video International. I am tempted to just go up and down the list of items that make this a must-see, but I could never do it enough justice. Just watch it, and you’ll be telling me all about it.
James Cameron and John Carpenter, look out-- Here comes a big surprise!

Steven Kostanski is the man who wrote, directed and edited this cult favourite faux trailer. It is nine minutes of frenzied 80's horror/sci-fi/action that apparently you can replicate, when you've got the tools and you've got the talent-- With just enough humour sprinkled in to let you know it's taking the piss out of itself.
The audience is quickly brought up to speed on the events of the “previous feature”, given clues that are a perfect fit for what our imaginations tell us. There are distinct relationships and motives exposed in the first act between all characters. What makes this film an especially good concept is...

Astron 6: "Sebastian & Alan"

Director/writer Adam Brooks brings you this harrowing short film that the viewer must be warned is not for tender sensibilities. All violence in this film is practically off-screen, but the implication and the language is graphic. It invokes a strongly negative feeling, so be warned.
The Astron-6 logo comes up with a much more looming alarm sound, much like a warning, then turns blood red...
"Sebastian & Alan" begins with two road-weary travellers about to make what seems to be a routine gas stop. The dialogue is light, the mood is sluggish, and when Sebastian and Alan are alone together, there is nothing suspicious about them.
One is significantly older than the other, but there appears to be some type of equality between the two. An apprenticeship? A pact? Father and son? You never know. One would never imagine such a pair to be murder accomplices.

The rusted-out shitbox pulls into a gas station where the story begins. The steady crawl begins. Alan fuels the car while ...

Astron 6: "GoreBlade"

From epic to episodic, these are the day-in-the-life dilemmas that even the mightiest hero can be felled by. Action-packed with goofy awesomeness, Goreblade carries you kicking and screaming into the hellish bowels of life as a random dude.
The most affable barbarian in otherworldly lore is brought out into the blazing sun for you to relate to and laugh with. He's really just a regular guy, trying to get through existence using only the kickass tools given to him by the gods.

The stunning opening title sequence suggests to you that you are in for a hell of an adventure. Each chapter is artfully driven by Jeremy Gillespie's glib dialogue, and directed largely by the multi-talented Adam Brooks. Steven Kostanski has heavy involvement in many aspects of the production including special effects. Careful attention to detail combined with blatent disregard for detail make for a hilarious running gag.

Astron 6: "Siam I Am"

Siam I Am is a black comedy about the trials of a frustrated siamese twin who is brought to a dubiously tough decision by his lovestruck brother. It shows the twisted logic that jealousy spawns when a charming new neighbour comes between them.
Click here to view the short film.

Written, directed and edited by Conor Sweeney.
Matthew Kennedy/Chris Epp play the loving twins. They look remarkably alike, so one must remember that Epp is the one on the right, and Kennedy is Francis on the left. Or is that the other way around?
Amy Groening plays a darling girl next door that complicates matters and brings everything to a head. I can only assume the "Waluigi" thing is some sort of twisted true-life anecdote.
Adam Brooks is an unreliable Facebook gun-for-hire with some rare form of ADHD. A natural scene-stealer every time.

I completely love the work that these guys do. From pre-production to post-production. They range in mood and genre, showing a powerful diversity and carry a sinfully talented eye for detail.
The Ruins

I had no hopes for this movie, truthfully. I wound up liking it, so I would suggest it to anyone looking for an evening thrill. The Ruins is served an injustice in the trailers, but the trailers are meant to draw out the lowest common denominator.

It's about a bunch of young Americans wandering into the deadly clutches of some unknowable evil. Spoiled, attractive tourists with shit for brains-- a cautionary tale.. and yes, it DOES have that as it's premise. But there is so much more.

It's a tragedy of misunderstanding. It's the horror of being nature's fodder. It's the maddening surprises that the "evil" in this story bring to the table.
For a horror movie, I will point out that there was no particular bad acting on the part of any performer, and the writing was relatively intelligent, if irrational.
Up to this point, I would call it your standard horror movie. Typical gets two stars. It got the extra star for total originality. You are not allowed to know the motiva...

It was a long time coming for me to finally appreciate my place of origin. It has gone through many metamorphoses, and not all of them were good.
It's considered the eleventh most dangerous city in Canada, and the foremost dangerous city in Ontario. Those stats were taken when I was out of town, though. I am back, and issuing spanking where necessary. Then I will have a word with the editor of Maclean's.

Rent "Superhero Movie" and Be JUDGED!

I don't know why I subject myself to spoof comedy.

Eighty-nine minutes of my life was spent in a bit of a panic. I was promised a moderately funny movie, not an excruciating insult. I was angry with myself for being sucked into the old trick-- Superhero comedy. They have great expectations for such low budgets, and only Sky High ever pulled it off.

Watching the trailer to Superhero Movie, you envision a myriad of sight-gags, because the trailer offers what you think is a "sample" of some of the better stuff. Then you realize that not only did you get the full sum of special effects, you also were fed every joke that could be shown on television. The rest of it is total embarrassment.
The cast should have been the sale of the feature. Leslie Nielsen and Christopher McDonald are two excellent performers, but it seems like any comedy script either one of them picks in the last ten years is doomed to fail. I figured that perhaps the two of them appearing in the same movie wou...

Blade Runner

This is the movie that I grew up on. It celebrated its 25th anniversary last Thanksgiving with a box-set re-release of four versions-- Original Theatrical Release, European Edition, Director's Cut, and Final Edition. I have watched all four versions in the last two days, and I can't get enough.
When I was young, I was an incurable insomniac, and would stay up all night watching movies on the Toronto station CityTV. This was the movie that was shown almost once a month. It was a staple for late-night viewers, and someone at City obviously liked it a lot.

It is loosely based on a novel by Philip K. Dick called "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep". The theme remains, but the events of the story are almost entirely different. Director Ridley Scott combined many talents to tell the tale from a dizzying, smoke-filled perspective in the style of filme noir before it.
It's the story of a bounty hunter whose job it is on post-war Earth to track down and eliminate escaped slave andr...
